The Old Believers of Riga
The Old Believers represent the steady ethno confessional group, which historical heritage is an integral part of cultural space of modern Latvia. In the territory of present Latvia the population of Old Believers appeared in the middle of the 17th century. Today in Latvia live about 70 000 Old Believers and descendants of Old Believers’ families. In Riga there is an Old Believers’ church which in itself is unique. It can contain about 5 thousand people. Riga Grebenshtchikov Old Believers community is the biggest community in the world which unifies the Old Believers of the coast-dweller non priest consent.
During the tour you will visit the church of the Grebenshchikovsky old believer’s community. Look at the building Interior, with very rich and old Iconostasis (14 – 19 centuries). Certainly you will find out more about belief which existed in Russia before the split of Russian Orthodox Church. Community is located in Moscow Suburb – historical centre of Riga, which since 17 century was mainly inhabited by Russian merchants and tradesmen. Tour includes small ride with a guide on Riga tramway through “Moscow Suburb”, where you will be able to see totally opposite and very different, and non touristic side of Riga!
