Jewish Riga

The first settlement of Jews in Latvia dates back to 16 century. Within few decades Jews started to play an important role in economical, commercial and social spheres throughout history of Latvia. During the period of first independence, Jews formed political parties and became members of parliament. Before First World War the population of Jews reached up till 190, 000. Some of them became famous worldwide! After Second World War population of Jews decreased to 10%.  Nowadays Latvia is inhabited by bit more then 10 000 Jews. But their community is quite strong!
